Getting around and Where to eat

Bicycle riders from infancy, the expert cyclists of La Digue are entirely accustomed to life on two wheels, and chatting with friends, sending SMS messages, even shopping for cooking gas canisters, is done perched on a bicycle.

The island’s small size and lack of four wheeled transport makes hiring a bicycle the ideal choice for visitors to La Digue too, and there are many hire companies to choose from. Unlike the rest of the world bicycle theft is unheard of on La Digue and a bicycle propped up beside the road in the morning will still be there at the end of the day when a relaxed sun-bather is ready to roll back home.
Ox-carts were traditionally used on La Digue to transport anything too cumbersome to be balanced on a bicycle’s cross bar. Today the island’s ox-carts instead provide visitors to the island with a gently relaxing trip around the La Digue coastal plateau and between the island’s hotels and beaches.
A number of the island’s hotels and travel companies also operate their own bus services to help facilitate guest transfers and the island also boasts a small number of taxis for visitors wishing to move around the island in additional comfort.
